Our Volunteers

Our Volunteers make lessons possible

Our volunteers are hands on members of the team, supporting by handling our horses and giving physical and emotional support to our riders. Volunteers also contribute by serving on the all-volunteer board of directors, supporting fundraisers, and helping out with other projects.

“Truth be told, I often leave with tears of joy after witnessing the amazing breakthroughs and accomplishments of our brave riders! The time fills me with gratitude.”
— Diane Hagarty, Rainbow Volunteer

VOLUNTEERING WITH OUR STUDENTS AND HORSES

Our volunteers are critical to maintaining the quality of our program. Safety is always the focus of Rainbow’s riding activities, so hands-on volunteer training is mandatory for all horse-leaders and side-walkers. (All volunteers must be at least 14 years old.)

Side-walkers work in unison with other team members, including the instructor, the horse leaders and the student. Side-walkers should be able to walk or trot alongside a rider, providing support to the rider if needed. Depending on ability, students who are not yet able to ride independently will have either one or two side-walkers.

Horse-leaders are selected by our instructional staff. Horse-leaders should have prior experience with horses and have been a side-walker at Rainbow. They are responsible for leading the horse during a lesson. They are confident controlling the horse while following the instructors' directions. Horse-leaders are also responsible for preparing the horse before the lesson and caring for the horse after a lesson.
